Bunkers Along The Coast, Greece

Saronida has some paved walking paths along the coast line going in both directions. It also has some interesting, little dirt paths along the cliffs. The more we walked and explored the more we started to notice something that looked like bunkers.. These specifically spiked our interest, so we took the time to find any information we could on them. We managed to confirm that they were from WWII but after that finding information proved to be almost impossible.

TripAdvisor and Google talk about a few of the bunkers in Greece. One is on the Island of Crete; one that is 4 km south of Saronida (tagged as WWII German Bunker on google); and a few up near Bulgaria, Nestos River area in Greece.

These resources didn’t give us exact locations, more like general areas of where they could be found. This made it a bit challenging and humorous at times. We found some of the bunkers you could walk into, some were filled with dirt and others with garbage. It was nice to have a bit of a purpose for our walks, it gave us something to look forward to and seek out.

The first bunker we found was across from the My Market to the south of Saronida Beach. There are two parts to this bunker, the main building is further back from the coast than the second smaller part.

We noticed the second part in our first two weeks in Saronida, when we were walking around. There was a group of people sitting on a blanket on top of it enjoying the sun, we came back at a later date to look at it.

We then headed north up the Saronida Beach coast on the paved path. We found two more bunkers, 1 was about a km away from the beach. It is filled in and turned into a viewpoint with a bench.

The second bunker we found was around 2 km away from Saronida Beach and is fully accessible. There were a few bottles and other recreational items in the bunker, for this reason we did not go inside.

Finally we searched for the bunker marked on google maps. It's marked as a WWII German Bunker & church. It was a 4 km walk from where we were staying, we walked down the main road and when we could on the paths beside the road.

This bunker is by Anavyssos, between two beaches and a bay with boats. There is also a viewpoint and a church nearby.

Looking for the bunkers became a fun pass time for us as we walked the coast line. We decided to not mark the bunkers on the maps, as they are easily found and a good pass time for someone staying in the area.

Cheers!
